                         Wayfarer History

The Wayfarer sailing dingy was first produced in 1957 as a wooden boat. Since then the Wayfarer has gone through numerous versions in fiberglass. The hull shape and sail plan have been tightly controlled to keep all of the versions of the Wayfarer competitive. The pages in this web site will help you understand the passion our members have for the Wayfarer; whether they use their boat for racing or cruising.
When Englishman Ian Proctor initially set about drafting the lines of the Wayfarer in 1957, his objectives were threefold. First, he wanted a boat that performed well enough to be suitable for competitive class racing. Secondly, the boat needed to be roomy and stable to make it an attractive family boat. Lastly, it was to be endowed with features such as large stowage compartments and other cockpit amenities, which would enhance its utility as a camping/cruising boat. All of this was with the view that the dinghy would be sailed for the most part in the rough, turbulent, coastal waters of the British Isles. Ian Proctor succeeded with remarkable genius in achieving all three of his goals.

-The very first Melges 17 arrived at Lake Eustis:

The new Melges 17 class is off to a great start with many Regattas already sailed all over the U.S.! This very high tech new Melges design might well be another great One Design Class to further establish our sailing club for the long haul by attracting active sailors to our 'One Design' Lake Eustis Sailing Club and its big beautiful Lake in Central Florida.
These boats are tremendous: Very well balanced, newest materials being used, strong and light weight, easy to sail, easy to keep upright, very fast and exiting: This is the real thing and so easy to handle: One quick pull on a line and it will furl the jib out of the way, (very handy for docking), couple of quick pulls and the A symmetric spinnaker is up and the bow sprit comes out etc. all with one line...
The Melges 17 gives the opportunity to feel the speeds of an A or E Scow on a much more manageable and affordable platform.
The 2nd Annual Melges 17 Midwinter Regatta will be sailed right here on Lake Eustis on March 9-11 and includes a  Zenda U Sail Fast Clinic, free to all Regattas sailors, on March 8 from 12 noon till 5 pm.

Are you a Certified Sailing Instructor willing to use your skills in order to help teaching kids to sail? Contact : Martin Zonnenberg at MBPZ@comcast.net . Also, it would be very much appreciated if you as an experienced sailor would like to become involved with junior sail training: Please be in touch!

Thanks to MC Scow and E Scow sailor Dave Moring, MC Scow Fleet 4 now has its own MC Scow Fleet 4 informative website http://www.fleet4.com
