13th Wayfarer Midwinter Championship Regatta and 4th Annual Train Wreck Regatta for MC’s, February 3-5 - Everyone at Lake Eustis Sailing Club is gearing up for Wayfarer and MC sailors coming from the northern states and Canada to enjoy some sun and fun sailing on Lake Eustis. This year seems to have brought warmer weather than the past few years, so make sure you have some sun tan lotion available. We may experience some cool fronts pushing through bringing stronger winds, but greater sailing challenges. Wayfarer sailors make sure you have per-registered with Mike & Dotty Murto. MC sailors can still sign up at the MC website. Click on: MC NOR and REGISTER.

Welcome, to the Lake Eustis Sailing Club!

Established in 1953, the sailing club (LESC) has grown to become the most active one-design racing club in all of Central Florida.

Home to the Flying Scot, Wayfarer, Laser, C-Scow and the largest fleet, the MC Scow, LESC runs over 80 club races a season and hosts eight regattas a year.

Our mission is to foster and promote one-design racing among sailors of all ages. Most importantly, we have fun doing so!

It is 1-2-12 and the first day of winter for us in central Florida. Well the last of 2011 and first of 2012 sailing is over. We didn’t have to struggle to award the four “LF Sail 2011 2012” T shirts as only four sailed both days. The three Daves and the one Sam. Dave Moring and Dave Johnson in MCs and Dave Meaker and Sam in Lasers. On Saturday Richard Kinnie had the A cat out, but rigging up the Helmick's A-cat broke the spreader so that boat never sailed. The Flying Scot sailor and his wife from Connecticut looking for a Florida home with a Scot fleet came by. They met a Scot crew but couldn’t stay till Sunday when Gus Chennells, Randy Boekema, Ray Laguna, and Jay and Dave Asaibene showed up. Gus sailed with the Lasers on Sunday – Sally Hennessey, Dave Meaker, Gus and Sam. Jay and Dave even took a Scot out for a sail. Monica Nagel with Chris and Jackie came by. Chris rigged a Laser, but didn’t get the right wind and had to settle for a sail with Dennis in the MC. Poor kid. – Then he had to go home and prepare for the robotics championship. Dennis sailed the motor boat on Saturday and the MC on Sunday – didn’t qualify for a T-shirt. The Moring’s all came Sunday and kids had bicycles. Patti took the picture of the LF T-shirts. The Johnson Family and baby started out the New Year and a few others stopped by. The lights on the C scow went on at 5:29 PM -- drive by in the evening and check them out. article by Sam Chapin

Pick any sunny weekend - even in December where the winds are blowing 12-15 mph and watch a bunch of crazy adults gather for fun. This particular December, the first race began in a nice breeze of 8-10 mph for the Flying Scott and Wayfarer start, but quickly progressed 5 minutes later to 10-12 mph for the MC Scow start. Each leg of the windward-leeward course saw an increase in the wind speed until the last down wind leg of the first race became a surfing contest in 15+ mph and gusts exceeding 20 mph. Fortunately over the next two races, all sailors managed the strong winds and did not capsize. The slide show captures a Flying Scot start and some spinnaker runs in the blustery winds. Also of interest is the MC Scow down wind run followed by a mark rounding. Notice who comes out on top with the crowded rounding, with scows jibing during the turn. Thanks Mike for the great shots who also served on the safety boat during the races.
